What is a good tip for homeschooling an ADHD child?

Homeschooling An ADHD Child

The most important thing that a homeschooling parent of an ADHD child can do is strike a balance between order and flexibility so the school day flows. If you are overly rigid, your child may buck the system and you may find yourself in a contest of wills. If you are too flexible, your child may loose focus. No one knows your child better than you. You will know when the child should be pushed toward a goal. You will also know when your child has had enough for the day. If your child has had enough, be flexible and simply put aside homeschool for the day. If you keep pushing the issue the child may start to resent homeschooling. A child who resents homeschooling is a very hard child to teach.

I have a 14 year old daughter with ADD. This is our first year homeschooling. We have a flexible schedule, but a SCHEDULE none-the-less! She does much better when she KNOWS what is expected of her and it helps her keep on track. She does not do well in an unstructured environment, however, the rigid structure of public school did not allow her the opportunity to have a program just for her individual learning style. We have been able to pick and choose what is best for her. She has been included in making the decisions on which curriculum to use. This has made her feel responsible for her own education and has helped her to be motivated to do her very best. My only regret is that we didn't start homeschooling sooner.
