What if my child goes back to school? Can she get in?

Going Back to Regular School

If you and your child decide that "regular" school is better for you both, don't worry about your child getting back in to school. Children who are US citizens cannot be denied public education unless they have been legally expelled or some other extenuating circumstance exists. Depending on which state you live in, there are different routes to enrolling your child into public school. If you declare yourself a private school, then keeping good records of daily activities and the subjects studied is crucial in deciding to enroll your child in school. If you enroll in an independent study program (ISP), either private or through a public school, you will have no problems transferring back into the system.

If you do decide to go back to "regular" school, don't feel like a failure. You have to do what is best for both you and your child. Sometimes, that is not homeschooling.

I know there are times when things in life are out of our control. For instance, I am 38 years old and have been diagnosed with a debilitating illness that leaves me in constant pain and extremely exhausted. I don't mean tired; most mornings I can barely get out of bed, but I DO! This is, in part, because I decided to homeschool a year ago BEFORE I fell ill. My daughter is in the 9th grade and has been in public school her entire life. However, when I started teaching her at home I soon discovered that she was behind in English. She did not even know how to use a dictionary; she had no idea what the guide words were at the top of the pages! My husband was working on a construction job and his crew consisted of 7 Navajo Indians. One of them, jokingly, told him that now he knew how Custer felt being surrounded by Indians. My daughter said, "Who's Custer!" There have been countless instances such as these. She always brought home decent grades in public school. I never missed a parent teacher conference. I thought that she was doing fine. I had actually worried about learning gaps when I first started homeschooling. Yes, she had plenty of them FROM being in public school! As long as God gives me strength to move and speak I will never stop homeschooling!!! I also have a 3 & 4 year old that my husband and I decided to homeschool. I do not want them to end up like my 15 year old. She is a good student and has caught on quickly to EVERYTHING that I have taught her. It makes me very angry to think she has not been learning in public school, yet has brought home good grades. Sometimes, other school officials, such as in college admissions, wonder if homeschooling parents pad there kids grades! I wonder if she was given easy graded assignments in public school to have good grades and still not know what she should for her age. I talked to a friend of mine about this who works in the public school system and she said her daughter is probably not learning everything that she should either. She said it is not the teachers' fault; they have to spend a lot of their classroom time just getting the kids to behave so that they can teach! No, as long as God allows me, no matter how painful or tired, I will teach my children. Nothing worth while is ever easy or free! My children are worth any sacrifice.
